Proposed Global Dimension Themes

Global Citizenship

Children gaining a mutual awareness of the problems they face in the world and exploring solutions each can offer/ take action on.  Learning about the values needed to sustain a world of equality and peace and which contribute to a more sustainable and just world.

Values and perceptions

Establishing mutual respect, equity, trust and understanding between the two communities.  Extending children's understanding of their role in changing perceptions and stereotypes of people in a multicultural society.

Human Rights

Knowing about human rights and, in particular, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.  Understanding rights and responsibilities in a global context and the inter-relationship between the global and the local.  Valuing our common humanity and the meaning of universal human rights.  Knowing and understanding that "Childhood itself is a right worthy of protection in every nation". Relate this to the Every Child Matters agenda.

Diversity

Raising the awareness of the similarities and difference between the two communities.  Encourage children to challenge stereotypical images of people and places.  It is important to understand that a variety of lifestyles exist within society in both communities and that we should not compare lifestyles base only on material wealth.  Exploring the nature of prejudice and ways to combat it.  Valuing all people as equal and different and having a willingness to learn from others and to value the rights of others.

Sustainable development

Children develop an understanding of the need to maintain and improve the quality of life now without damaging the planet for future generations.
