Worlebury's Royal Birthday Picnic - 11th June

What a huge success this was.

Not only did it raise £430.92 for the school, but it was a day enjoyed by the whole community.  It was lovely to see Worlebury staff, governors, parents and children, Worlebury residents and members of the parishes of St Paul’s and St Peter’s taking part and enjoying the many activities of the day.

A big thank you must be said to all the staff, parents, governors, residents and church community for all their help and a very special thank you to Mrs Pincott for all her hard work in organising this fantastic and memorable event!

Outdoor Play Area

Parents are reminded that the use of the adventure playground after school, including weekend events, is done so at their own risk and that parent/carers are solely responsible for supervising the safe use of the areas at this time.

The equipment is recommended for primary aged children only.

Hooke Court 2016

We're having a great time!

Kayaking was awesome! We got very wet and played lots of games.

Here we are on our 'forest orienteering'. We touched the magic tree and made a wish; it was very peaceful.

Last night we sang songs around the campfire. Some of us were still singing this morning!

Worlebury Conference – A Real Success!

On behalf of all the staff and governors, thank you to all who were able to come along to Worlebury Conference!

During the evening we listened to Dr. Tom Robson discuss growth mindset and how we can encourage our children to be problem-solvers and to consider how the language we use can impact our children.  As a group we considered how we can enable our children to aim to keep their learning in the ‘challenge zone’ as opposed to the ‘comfort zone’ and therefore develop the children’s resilience, collaboration, perseverance, motivation and resourcefulness.

To finish the evening we revisited the school’s vision…

“A school community where everyone participates excels and has a love of learning; where we respect ourselves, one another and live life to the full, helping others to do the same”.

Well done to all the children for such wonderful singing and thank you to the Governors and Parents who helped make the trip happen.

Year 3 and 4 Egyptologists

On Monday 28th September Years 3 and 4 visited Bristol Museum and Art Gallery to discover more about the Ancient Egyptians as part of their Learning Theme.

We were treated to a fantastic workshop where we investigated real and replica artefacts from ancient Egypt. By asking questions and making careful observations we were able to work out which people in Egyptian society would have owned the objects. We also explored the Egyptology area and became experts on Egyptian belief, life, death and afterlife.

Thank you to all the adult volunteers who helped and made our trip possible.

Poetry Workshops by James Carter

On Tuesday 29th September, Worlebury St Paul’s was visited by poet and guitarist James Carter.  James believes that “poems are the most fun you can have with words” and he certainly proved this with his wonderfully entertaining assemblies for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, and his workshops for every class in the school. The children were inspired to write fabulous poems, some of which will be sent to James for him to read and comment on. He has a number of excellent books for children which can be found at the following website:

http://www.jamescarterpoet.co.uk/booksforchildren.html

 Comments from the children:

“He was very inspiring and extremely funny.”

“It was an amazing experience and it really helped me to develop my writing.”

“It was fun and I enjoyed it a lot. I learnt that you can get ideas from everywhere and you always need to keep your mind open.”

Greatwood 2015

Beautiful morning at camp....

Book Sale - Year R

Year R were set the challenge of becoming authors.   We had to base our stories on a theme being loyalty or power. We planned our stories and then set about designing a front cover, title page, blurb and actual story.

We then re-drafted our stories and then we became publishers and wrote the stories out in pen.

We decided how much we should sell our stories for (£1) and then set about inviting our parents in to buy our books.

They were all very impressed with how hard we had worked.  In total we raised £32 and are planning on sending it to a Children's Hospice (Charlton Farm) in Weston.

African Inspired Food

In Term 3 Year 5 had a fantastic term exploring the continent of Africa. They have used atlases to investigate different countries, researched the different rivers, become knowledgeable about the variety of landscapes and created their own African myth inspired by traditional stories. Everyone loved finding out about the lemurs on Madagascar and before letting their imaginations run wild and creating a newly discovered African animal which was written about in a detailed report. To finish off, we enjoyed tasting African fruits and designing our own Morocan inspired cous cous dish. Our cooking skills have definitely improved and it was great to feast on healthy tagine and cous cous on the last day of term.

Recognition and Consequences

As a school we have reviewed our Behaviour Rewards and Sanctions checklist in consultation with staff and children. We have decided to use the terms Recognition and Consequences and have fewer steps before the children get to the purple and red card. The system is used for children in Year One to Year Six . Year R use their class system using the Sun, Cloud and Star.

WOW Day - Year 5 and 6

What a fantastic way to start the year!

To launch their new learning theme, An African Adventure, Years 5 and 6 experienced a very special wow day with the help of Simon Carver from 'Rhythm for Life'. Each year group attended a drumming workshop  where they learnt about African cultural rhythms, the different types of drums and percussion, and developed their 'call and response' skills. The sessions required a lot of concentration, particularly when there was more than one rhythm being played in the circle!

Everyone had a great time, with plenty of energy and enthusiasm throughout. The day culminated in a performance to parents where the children showcased their individual creativity and co-operative spirit. It made our learning theme come alive and we can't wait to discover more about Africa.

Remembrance Week at Worlebury St Paul’s

Worlebury St Paul’s Primary School commemorated the centenary of World War I with the whole school taking part in a range of activities to bring the past to life.

One of the highlights was a workshop where children learnt about what it was like as a solider in World War I. The children were fascinated to learn all about life in the trenches, weaponry and how soldiers spent their days. There was even an opportunity to practise marching!

As well as class-based learning about the significant events of the war, one day was dedicated to creating poppy artwork. The groups included children from reception to Year 6 and everyone enjoyed helping each other to create stunning pieces of artwork such a stained glass poppy paintings, miniature poppies and remembrance crosses.

The school came together for Worships to understand the importance of remembering those who have been and are still in involved in conflict. Year 3 and 4 led a special Family Worship where they shared their poetry and prayers. The week culminated in a Year 5 and 6 performance of the play ‘Archie and Annie’s War’ which told the story of the impact of war through the eyes of two young children. The play showcased superb acting and singing and received excellent reviews from staff, children and parents.

Poppies and poppy memorabilia were sold throughout the week by children, and the school is proud to have raised money for the British Legion.

“I learnt that we wear poppies to remember the soldiers who went to war.” Mimi, Reception

“The visit from the solider made me understand what it must have been like to be a soldier.” Bruce, Year 4

“It made me realise how the events of the past have shaped our lives today.” Emile, Year 6

Sporting Events

A big well done to Worlebury's two football teams!  Two teams were taken to St Anne's Primary for a football match.  The first game we won 3-0, followed by a 5-1 win in the second game.

Also well done to all children who participated in the cross country at Hutton Moor.  All the children ran really well, including a 2nd place finish for Annabel Cunningham in Year 5, and a 6th place finish for Millie Redman in Year 3!

Year 5 & 6

October 2014

Year Five and Six children visited the SS Great Britain in Bristol as part of their Learning Theme ‘Whose Footsteps do we Follow?’

The children were amazed by the detail inside the great ship as history was brought to life by an excellent tour guide and manikins dressed as Victorian passengers and crew.  They were eager to learn all the fascinating details about the building, launch and voyaging of the great ship and were a credit to our school.  The children also took part in a workshop where they were transported back to 1842 to become part of the team that built the ship and then to 1843 along with costumes for the launch!

Year R - Journeys

We have been doing lots around journeys this term.

We looked at (in very wet weather) what journey paint and water goes on. We mixed paints and put paper over the top to see what journey they went on. We got very messy but it was so much fun.

We have also had Arnie the tortoise in (Miss Porter's best friend's tortoise) as we were interested in how tortoises moved and the journeys they went on. We also compared him to a turtle. We had great ideas, held him and even made up songs about Arnie.

Finally, we had a healthy meals session. We were able to try different fruits, vegetables, breads and yoghurt. We all had lots to eat and were very full by the end of the day.

Year 6 Leavers' Service

It was time to say goodbye to our Year 6 and tissues were at hand for parents and staff to dry their eyes as we watched our wonderful children sing, dance and share their memories of  Worlebury St Paul's.

The Mayor of Weston-super-Mare, Councillor Mrs Rosslyn Willis handed out bibles that were kindly donated by Oldfield Trust and the Friends of Worlebury St Paul's to each of our Year 6 children.

Good luck Year 6 - we will miss you.

Tag Rugby

Tag rugby club finished with a mini tournament this term.  The children showed off a great variety of skills which they had developed over the term.

The children were very enthusiastic and really enjoyed themselves.

Year 5

Bristol Old Vic Workshop

At the beginning of term 5, Year 5 were lucky enough to experience a drama workshop delivered by an expert from Bristol Old Vic Theatre Company. The workshop was based on A Midsummer Night's Dream which was the focus of our poetry unit that term.

The session started off with the children carrying out various ‘warm-up’ exercises. These involved the children working in pairs and mirroring each other; a torturous sounding ‘Cuban Hypnosis’ where the children held their hands in a frame shape and their partner had to move their faces within that frame; and working in a circle to create firework noises. The class was then split into two groups. One group worked with percussion instruments to create a ‘sound-scape’ of a storm in the Athenian Woods while the other group paired up to perform the corresponding argument between the controllers, and king and queen of the woods, Oberon and Titania.

Both groups then watched the other perform and critically evaluated their performance. It was a very exciting morning, enjoyed by all, and we were only sorry that it didn’t last longer.

Priory Computing Sessions

Year 5 were given the opportunity to use the resources in Priory ICT suite in a series of four workshops delivered by Priory’s head of ICT, Mr T Pound. Each child was able to logon to their own Mac computer where they accessed software called Scratch. The children were shown how to programme this software to create their own game of Pong. It was quite tricky and very complicated but the children persevered and some of the results were extremely impressive!

This was an experience enjoyed by all of the children and their new skills will hopefully be utilised next year when the children may be given an opportunity to demonstrate how to programme Scratch to other year groups.

Year Six Leavers' Service and Tudor Banquet

Year 6 attended the Wells Leavers' Worship in June. It was a wonderful event full of workshops that ranged from; drama to crafts and even circus skills! Of course central to the day was a very special service where many schools came together and celebrated the special memories created at primary school and blessings for the new journey which they are about to embark upon.

All the schools brought a special banner and these were carried around the church in a very poignant procession. It was a day full of reflection, thought and fun, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

The Y6 children were treated to a ‘Tudor Banquet’ as part of their learning theme on ‘Kings and Queens’. They all brought in delicious food and the costumes were fantastic.

It has to be said the highlight of the afternoon was the entertainment; executing your teacher certainly produced a great deal of laughter!

Year One Cabbage Patch kids

Since September the Year One children have been learning about gardening and growing your own vegetables. Back in October the class planted their own cabbages which they have looked after beautifully, watering and weeding the area around them.

Finally in May the children were able to pick the cabbages and take them home for tea and Weston Mercury were able to join is in this celebration! The children are now looking forward to harvesting the onions.

Year R

Nick came in to Year R for their WOW Day to talk to the children about space. He showed them a telescope and taught them the order of the planets using different sized balls.

The children asked lots of questions. Why was there no gravity in space?  Why wasn't Pluto a planet anymore? This was because Pluto is now deemed a dwarf planet as it is too small.

Year R have also been learning about pirates and pirate ships. By the end of the learning theme children were building pirate ships and using jewels in the pirate ship to make up number sentences. Fun was had by all as they learned pirate songs and dances.

Hooke Court - Year 6 Camp

The Year 6 children created some wonderful memories at Hooke Court which we are sure will last them a life time.

The children got involved in an enormous range of activities; from kayaking to singing round a campfire. There was never a dull moment!

The children’s behaviour was outstanding and several of the Hooke Court staff commented on what a great group we had. We were even allowed marshmallows – a treat most groups don’t get!

A huge thank you went to our camp leader Miss Porter and also Mrs Barrett and Mrs Jones, for making this amazing experience possible.

Thank you children for my first Y6 camp; you were a pleasure.

Mrs Thorn
